An award-winning project integrating photovoltaics and green hydrogen to create an emissions-free, energy-intensive industry

Feasibility study for the integration of a green hydrogen plant into an industrial process characterised by high seasonality, with the aim of utilising the renewable energy already available on-site and reducing reliance on natural gas. The project, previewed at HydrogenExpo 2026, proposes a concrete decarbonisation model for the hard-to-abate industrial sector.

The concept involves using the energy generated by the existing approximately 1 MW photovoltaic plant during months when production is halted to power an electrolyser and produce green hydrogen, which is then stored and subsequently used in a blend with methane during the operational season. The configuration recommended by the study involves low-pressure storage at 35 bar for approximately 670 kg of hydrogen and sufficient energy autonomy to last until the plant closes.
The project’s innovation lies in its ability to transform seasonal production fluctuations into an energy resource, creating a scalable and replicable model for other energy-intensive manufacturing facilities. The innovative value of the initiative was recognised at the 2026 Italian Hydrogen Technology Awards, where it won the prize in the ‘Industrial Sector’ category.
