In Brunico, the construction of the new green hydrogen refuelling station, promoted by Alperia and designed by IIT Hydrogen, is entering its final phase, supporting sustainable mobility. The plant will strengthen South Tyrol’s network for the decarbonisation of transport, in line with European objectives and the Brenner Green Corridor.
Work is proceeding apace on the construction of the green hydrogen refuelling infrastructure located in Brunico (BZ), developed on the initiative of Alperia and designed and managed by IIT Hydrogen Srl. Approximately one year after the start of construction, the plant is nearing full functionality.
The station is designed to meet the refuelling needs of decarbonised mobility, in line with European climate neutrality objectives and the guidelines of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The site will be able to supply up to 800 kg of hydrogen per day through refuelling points at 350 and 700 bar, making it suitable for a wide range of fuel cell vehicles: from local public transport to heavy logistics and private mobility.
Currently, the main equipment for hydrogen management and distribution is being assembled and installed, including compressors, storage systems, control panels and dispensers. This will be followed by technical verification and commissioning procedures, which are essential to ensure the safety, reliability and compliance of the plant with regulatory standards.
To celebrate this important milestone, the Provincial Councillor for Mobility, Daniel Alfreider, visited the site. During the meeting, the main technological and strategic aspects of the plant were explained in detail, with a long-term view to strengthening the hydrogen supply chain in South Tyrol.
“Sustainable mobility is a priority for South Tyrol, and projects like this demonstrate in concrete terms how it can be achieved. In addition to mobility, we must now also focus on the development of green hydrogen use in industry. With a view to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, we are committed to zero-emission mobility. South Tyrol has been a pioneer in hydrogen, but we must continue to be active and consistent because we truly believe in it.”
This infrastructure investment is part of a broader plan to promote hydrogen as a low-emission energy carrier, helping to develop concrete solutions for the decarbonisation of transport and reduce the environmental impact of the mobility sector. The new station in Brunico will complement the historic hydrogen refuelling station in Bolzano Sud, built and operated by IIT Hydrogen, which has been in operation since 2014 and is already a national and international benchmark for the use of hydrogen in urban and interurban areas.
The synergy between the two plants will create a more solid and widespread network to support sustainable mobility in South Tyrol, facilitating the adoption of fuel cell vehicles for public transport, logistics and private users. With the Brunico station expected to come into operation in the coming months, South Tyrol will be able to further strengthen its role as an advanced laboratory for energy transition, enhancing the integration between local green hydrogen production and infrastructure dedicated to its use in transport. In this context, the Brunico plant will also contribute to strengthening the Brenner Green Corridor, a strategic axis for low-emission mobility along the Brenner corridor.
