As part of the EMPOWER project, IIT Hydrogen is collaborating on pilot trials for hydrogen-powered freight transport by truck.

The EMPOWER project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, aims to develop modular and efficient solutions for zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. The primary focus is the creation of two vehicle types: a battery electric vehicle (BEV) for regional use, with a range of 400 km, and a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) for long-distance transport, with a range of 750 km. The demonstration will take place in two phases. The first phase will test the maximum range of 750 km for the FCEV and 400 km for the BEV on the Balocco (VC) test track. The second phase will consist of a six-month final demonstration, during which the vehicles will be tested under real-world road conditions.

IIT Hydrogen is responsible for infrastructure, including its green hydrogen refueling station, where it is installing a 700-bar dispenser for refueling the FCEV truck. Additionally, IIT Hydrogen oversees the monitoring of existing and planned refueling infrastructures along the project’s demonstration routes in Austria and Germany, enhancing refueling opportunities. Furthermore, IIT Hydrogen organizes and hosts meetings and workshops dedicated to stakeholder groups.
