The Hydrogen Adige Valley project was inaugurated in Bolzano: a decisive step towards decarbonisation and sustainable mobility

04/07/2025

A hub for the production of green hydrogen is being created in the industrial area of Bolzano Sud, financed by the PNRR to promote sustainable mobility and decarbonisation. IIT Hydrogen will manage and maintain the plant, supporting a zero-emission future.

On 24 June 2025, the Hydrogen Adige Valley project was launched in the disused industrial area of Bolzano Sud. It is one of the most ambitious initiatives of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano to support the energy transition and accelerate decarbonisation through the use of green hydrogen.

Funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), the project is promoted by Alperia and SASA S.p.A., in collaboration with Strabag, Hydroalp and IIT Hydrogen, and aims to create a local hydrogen supply chain to power the zero-emission bus fleet, significantly reducing emissions from local public transport, which currently account for around 45% of the province’s carbon emissions.

During the event, Provincial Councillor for Mobility Daniel Alfreider highlighted the Province’s pioneering approach in considering green hydrogen as an integral part of the energy mix and the importance of innovative projects for job creation and technological development.

Claudio Vitalini, CEO of IIT Hydrogen, pointed out that collaboration between different areas of expertise is essential for the success of such complex initiatives. IIT Hydrogen, a pioneer in green hydrogen in South Tyrol and Italy, will contribute to the project by providing its engineering services and managing and maintaining the hydrogen plant.

The new plant will be built on two redeveloped sites, the former waste-to-energy plant and the SASA headquarters, with a capacity of 4 MW powered by two photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of 3.4 MWp, capable of producing approximately 1,700 kg of green hydrogen per day. This is a concrete step towards sustainable, zero-emission mobility, benefiting the local community and the environment.
